You’ve spent a fortune on that wall of bi-fold doors. Here’s the bit nobody mentioned: without a wind post, that glass can flex in a gale.

Let me explain what a wind post actually does — and why your open-plan back wall probably needs one.

A wind post isn’t holding up your house

Here’s the thing that confuses people. A wind post doesn’t carry the weight from above — that’s the beam’s job.

A wind post does something different: it stiffens a wall sideways. It stops a tall, wide opening from bowing or flexing when the wind pushes on it.

Think of it as a vertical stiffener — usually a steel section — hidden in the wall or cavity beside a big opening.

Why wide openings need them

When you knock out most of a back wall for sliding or bi-fold doors, you remove the very thing that used to brace that wall against the wind.

A 6–8m run of glazing has almost no sideways stiffness of its own. On an exposed elevation, wind load is real — and a wall that flexes will crack finishes, jam doors, and rattle.

A wind post takes that horizontal wind load and carries it safely up to the floor or roof above and down to the foundation. No flex, no drama.

Where they hide

Good news: you usually won’t see them.

  • In the cavity or wall beside the opening, boxed in.
  • Bolted top and bottom so they can transfer the wind load away.
  • Sized by an engineer to the opening width and how exposed your house is.

The mistake to avoid

Treating a big glazed opening as “just a bigger beam.” The beam handles the vertical load. The wind post handles the horizontal one. Miss the second and the opening can be structurally fine for weight but still misbehave in the wind.
